can i know when s letter is going to unpronounce give me a pieces of tip?
The letter <s> is not silent in very many words. The only common ones that I know of are isle, island, and aisle. Isle comes from French, where <s> tended often to fall silent. For instance, our words dime, dinner, dine, blame, and emerald are all from French and all originally had <s>’s in them that fell silent and then disappeared from the English spelling. In isle the <s>, though silent, stayed in the spelling. Then, by analogy with isle, an <s> was added to the native word that in Old English had been iegland and in Middle English had been ilond, leading to our island. Again by analogy an <s> was added to Middle English ele, ile, leading to our aisle. Three of the less common words with silent <s> also come from French: The first two are the legal terms mesne and demesne, the mesne being related to our mean meaning “middle”. The third is the surname Grosvenor, which comes from a French word meaning “gross (or big) hunter”. And finally there is the native English surname Carlisle, which is also spelled Carlile, Carlyle. I suspect that the <s> in Carlisle is due to some vague French influence.
