Teaching tips

Hi - My student will enter 6th grade. He is spelling on an early 3rd grade level. He now writes simple paragraphs independently. If this child (cognitively bright) uses The Basic Speller program, ought we supplement with daily spelling lists? Also, do you have any studies indicating the overall effectiveness of your basic spelling program? It looks excellent. Thanks!! Julie L.
Julie --

I do not recommend supplementing work with the Basic Speller with daily or weekly spelling lists. I believe that such lists can encourage brute memorization and work against the inductive and analytical approach that underlies the Basic Speller. The best approach, I believe, is to have the student work through the program steadily and deliberately, perhaps doing three to five lessons a week.

I do not have any systematic studies that show the effectiveness of the program. Anecdotally, I know that the youngsters who used it back in its early years of development did well on the Washington State fourth grade tests. And I know that older students, using a similar program, did well in Central Washington University's Academic Skills Program preparing to take the Teacher Education entrance exam.
