How do I mark a hard or soft c? The paper I have is of a rabbit handing out carrots with not tops. The students are to match the picture on the carrot with the correct carrot top. Half of the tops have c with the short sound, and half marked with the long. I can seem to find this anywhere! My first graders are getting restless! Perhaps this is a really old activity, and no markings are relevant?
I'm assuming that in the fourth sentence when you say "short" and "long", you mean "soft" and "hard." If so, the <c> is soft, spelling the sound [s], only when it is followed by <e>, <i>, or <y>. I can't tell whether this information is useful for the activity you describe. But if the activity is dealing strictly with the word carrot, the kids would only want to take the tops marked with a hard <c> since carrot starts with a hard <c>, with a [k] sound, since it is not followed by <e>, <i>, or <y>.
