There are quite a few words that have what could be treated as silent <l>’s -- some of which probably were never pronounced, some of which probably were, and some of which are still sometimes pronounced by some speakers, especially those whose pronunciation is influenced by the spelling: almond, alms, balm, balmy, becalm, calm, could, enbalm, enbalmer, halm, haulm, holm, malmsey, napalm, palm, palmer, palmistry, psalm, psalmist, psalmody, qualm, salmon, should, solder, would. Remember that these words have inflected or derived forms as well.
